Maria D. Alvarez is Professor of Tourism Marketing at the Department of Tourism Administration of Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. She holds a PhD degree in Marketing from Boğaziçi University, and two Masters Degrees: one in European Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) and an MBA from Cornell University.

Maria D. Alvarez is the director of the Boğaziçi University Tourism Administration and Research Centre, and has participated in several destination development and research projects in Turkey, financed by organisations such as UNWTO, UNDP, Thrace Regional Development Agency, etc.

She also serves in the editorial board of several journals, including Current Issues in Tourism, Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development, Journal of Hospitality Marketing and Management, Pasos: Journal of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, Anatolia: Turizm Araştırmaları Dergisi. 

Maria D. Alvarez has published in leading academic tourism journals, including Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Current Issues in Tourism, International Journal of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, International Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research, Journal of Hospitality Marketing and Management, Anatolia: An International Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research, Pasos: Journal of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, Tourism Review.

Her research interests include tourist behaviour, destination marketing and e-marketing.

Maria D. Alvarez co-organised and hosted the Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality, International Conference 2014 in Istanbul.
