Public Transport & I amsterdam City Card

The Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality, International Conference 2015, will take you to several locations by boat, bus and/or tram. You need to be prepared to use public transport to get to these locations or your hotel and are advised to wear comfortable shoes.

Depending on the duration of your stay, there are a number of different public transport passes that are especially valuable for visitors. See for these, maps, apps and other useful information on public transport:

After completing the booking process, you will receive a confirmation email. Print this out and present this at one of the pick-up locations to receive your I amsterdam City Card (you are required to pick up your card in person). You can only collect your pre-purchased card at the following two locations:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: Visitor Information Centre Schiphol Airport, Arrivals Hall 2: Holland Tourist Information
  • Amsterdam Central Station: Visitor Information at Stationsplein, Stationsplein 10 (opposite the main station entrance)

Travelling to VU/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

From Amsterdam Central Station choose one of the following public transport options:

  • metro tram 51, direction Amstelveen Westwijk, get off at: De Boelelaan/VU (16 minutes)
  • tram 5, direction Amstelveen Binnenhof , get off at: De Boelelaan/VU (25 minutes)
  • tram 16 or 24, direction VUmc: get off at the final stop.

From Station Amsterdam Zuid choose one of the following options:

  • express tram 51, direction Amstelveen Westwijk (1 minute)
  • tram 5, direction Amstelveen Binnenhof (1 minute)
  • or walk: it is only a 10 minute walk to the VU from Station Amsterdam Zuid.

Delegates arriving at Schiphol are recommended to take the train to Station Amsterdam Zuid and follow the directions give above.

The conference will take place on several locations and you are wise to be prepared to use public transport to travel to these locations or to get back to your hotel.

Directions for those who need to travel by car to VU University/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam:
 
The A-10 Amsterdam ring road can be reached from all directions. Follow the A-10 to the Zuid/Amstelveen exit S 108. Turn left at the end of the slip road onto Amstelveenseweg: after about three hundred yards (at the VU University hospital building) turn left again onto De Boelelaan. VU University Amsterdam can be reached via city routes S 108 and S 109.

There is a limited amount of parking space around VU University Amsterdam itself in De Boelelaan, which has parking bays, and also in Karel Lotsylaan. There is paid parking on VU Amsterdam parking lot to the right of the Hospital Outpatient Clinic. There is even more parking space on the east side of Buitenveldertselaan at the junction with Willem van Weldammelaan, within 5 minutes walking distance of VU University Amsterdam. A number of parking places for the handicapped are reserved in front of the VU University Amsterdam Main Building and within its grounds.


Special Sessions on Location

The Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality conference will include special sessions on location' in Amsterdam. Delegates will meet managers and curators of historically and architecturally significant parts of the city and/or museums, learn from their successes and the challenges they face. Delegates are invited to share with their hosts their knowledge and experience. 

Please note:
On Thursday afternoon you will be guided (and travel by bus or public transport) from VU University/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's campus to one of the 'special sessions on location'. After the visit you will need public transport (and/or walk) to travel home, get back to your hotel or to wherever you want to go to enjoy the city.

Conference Dinner / Canal Cruise

After the conference closing session delegates joining the conference session will embark on canal boats (after a 5-10 minutes walk from VU University/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). The canal cruise will end near Amsterdam Central Station at 20:00h. You will need public transport (and/or walk) to travel home, get to your hotel or go wherever you want to go to enjoy the city.
