Footprints of Defence in the Archipelago – DefenceArch

Telle Tuominen

Senior lecturer in tourism Management at Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS):

My presentation “Using storytelling and mobile app when converting coastal defence heritage into valuable tourist experiences” aims at sharing with you knowledge and experience resulting from the Footprints of Defence in the Archipelago (DefenceArch) project. These lessons pertain to, for example, the content creation process, digital storytelling and user experience.

DefenceArch has chosen four coastal areas – Gålö seal farm, Bomarsund fortress, southern cape of Örö fortress island and the Korpoström area – as pilot destinations. These destinations are characterised by existing, though almost untapped defence historical resources.

The aim of the project is to increase awareness, improve accessibility and customer experience through, for example, using new story-rich content and modern digital outputs, which will contribute to destination differentiation and length of stay.
