Silvia De Ascaniis

Silvia De Ascaniis is a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Communication Sciences at USI-Università della Svizzera italiana (Lugano, Switzerland). She got a PhD in Communication Sciences, with a thesis about pragmatic and argumentative features of online travel reviews.
She conducts teaching and research activities mainly in the frame of the UNESCO Chair in ICT to develop and promote sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites, on topics related to: the role and impact of ICT in cultural tourism, in religious tourism and pilgrimage; the use of ICT to promote Heritage preservation; Heritage communication through ICT. In particular, she coordinates the initiative #Faces4Heritage, aimed at raising awareness about Heritage destruction by violent extremism and promoting peace.
Among her main teaching commitments are: the Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) eTourism: Communication Perspectives‘ (the first MOOC in eTourism), the UNESCO Chair Summer Schools and the course Tourism and World Heritage within the Master in International Tourism at USI. She was executive director of two doctoral programs, both of them founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Silvia’s publications focus on a range of topics related to online communication and use a variety of analytical methods, always pursuing the goal of better understanding the relation between ICTs and human behavior.
