A call to action

Let’s join forces to end animal cruelty in tourism

Wild animals are not entertainers

HTHIC sees all beings, also non-human beings, as having inherent value and the fundamental right to be treated as such. We ask people who wish for a world of well-being to defend that right and help ban animal cruelty.

Tourism should be a force for good. Yet, more than 550,000 wild animals suffer to entertain tourists, who are often unaware of the cruelty behind attractions such as elephant rides, selfies with tigers, walking with lions, shows and swimming with dolphins.

Make sure you are a Real Responsible Traveller. World Animal Protection provides tips for enjoying an animal-friendly holiday.

Elephant Rides:
a lifetime of suffering

Elephants are highly intelligent, thoughtful, and loving. They protect each other, mourn when a herd member dies, and cry out for lost friends when separated. An estimated 3000 elephants suffer at tourist attractions across Asia and southern Africa. They undergo a brutal will-breaking process that involves beating, isolation, tying up, and starvation and develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Say no to elephant rides, close-up encounters, and shows and help raise awareness of the hidden cruelty behind this entertainment industry. Support organisations such as PETA and World Animal Protection by supporting their campaigns to end one of the world’s cruellest attractions.

Sign their petition* to convince governments and businesses to stop offering or promoting elephant rides. Over 200 travel companies worldwide have already pledged to this.

Adopt an elephant

Traumatised elephants cannot return to the wild. Open up your hospitable hearts for 65-year-old Mae Dok and secure her and her friends sufficient food and medicines in (World Animal Protection approved and “hand-free”) elephant shelter BEES in Thailand.

BEES was founded in 2011 by Burm Pornchai Rinkaew and Emily Rose McWilliam. It gives elephants the opportunity to retire and live a life worth living.
